1. In Dehradun the Imperial Forest Research Institute was set up in 1906 where they taught 'scientific forestry'. Scientific forestry was the way of doing plantation, which means where a row of single types of trees are planted in the place of different types of trees in a forest.
2. For plantation forest officials used to survey the forests and estimate the area under different types of trees to make working plans for forest management. The forest act was amended twice after 1878 and 1927. The 1878 forest act divided forests into three categories- reserved, protected and village forests. 3. The best forests were called 'reserved forests' and the villagers cannot take anything from these forests, not even for their own use. The protected or village forests were used to take wood for house building or fuel. 4. Bamboo was used to make fences, baskets and umbrellas. 5. A dried scooped-out gourd was used as portable water bottle. 6. Oil for cooking and lightning lamps was acquired from the fruit of the Mahua tree. 7. Leaves for used to make disposable cups and plates.
