1. In 1904 Charles Weld, an American geologist and Dorabji Tata, the eldest son of Jamsetji Tata, were travelling in Chhattisgarh in search of iron ore deposits in an attempt to set up an iron and steel industry in India. Weld and Dorabji observed groups of men and women belonging to the Agaria tribe carrying basketloads of iron ore.
2. They had procured the same from Rajhara Hills, one of the finest ores in the world. However, the region was dry and water was scarce and so, the search for a factory site had to continue. However, the Agarias helped in the discovery of a source of iron ore that would later supply the Bhilai Steel Plant. 3. By clearing forest on the banks of the river Subarnarekha to set up the factory, an industrial township named Jamshedpur was built where there was water near iron ore deposits. The Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) that came up began producing steel in 1912.
