Why do fish and frogs lay eggs in hundreds whereas a hen lays only one egg at a time?
Fish and frog produce a huge number of eggs compare to hens because of the following reasons -: 1. Fish and frog lay hundreds of eggs, all of these eggs do not get fertilized. Hence, very few new fish and frogs are produced.
2. Fish and frogs lay hundreds of sperms in water. Many of the sperms get washed away due to water movement. thus, eggs are not fertilized.
3. Many eggs are eaten by predators.
4. Even after eggs are fertilized to form larva, they are eaten by other water animals.
So, laying eggs in hundreds will give a chance for a few of them to survive and grow into adults. While hen lays only one egg because the egg development in the hen takes inside uterus thus loss of gamete does not take place therefore in hen the zygote formation is not controlled by nature. Hence, the survival of the chick which would hatch from the egg has much higher rates as compared to frogs and fishes.
